It is a long-held belief that large circular markings, or eyespots, on creatures such as butterflies deter predators as they mimic the eyes of its enemy. However, the markings are effective purely because they are conspicuous features which frighten hunters away, scientists at Cambridge University found.

In tests, artificial moths with big spots survived no better than those with other conspicuous markings.
